CLIMATE JUSTICE & RESILIENCE
The aim of this program is to enhance ecosystem and community resilience to climate change through nature-based solutions and targeted advocacy. Our objective is to enhance ecosystem and community capacity to withstand and adapt to climate change, while advocating for equitable solutions. We implement nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and wetland restoration, to protect water sources, sequester carbon, and buffer climate impacts. We support community-led adaptation initiatives, like climate-smart agriculture, and champion policies at all levels that recognize the intrinsic link between a healthy environment, community rights, and climate justice, highlighting the disproportionate burdens borne by vulnerable populations.
Key Activities:
- Climate-Smart Villages: Promote climate-adaptive agroforestry (integrating fruit/nut trees with crops), establish community-managed seed banks for drought-resistant varieties, and protect/restore headwater forests and wetlands.
- Community Early Warning Systems: Set up simple, localized systems for flood/drought alerts using both IK (e.g., animal behavior, plant flowering) and modern weather data.
- Policy Advocacy & Carbon Equity: Train community representatives to advocate in regional/national forums. If engaging in carbon projects, ensure robust community-led governance, transparent benefit-sharing, and adherence to Indigenous rights standards.
