COMMUNITY-LED SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIES

COMMUNITY-LED SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIES

The aim of this program is to develop viable economic alternatives to unsustainable resource extraction, directly linking community income to conservation performance. Our objective is to foster economic resilience and food sovereignty while reducing pressure on natural resources. We achieve this by developing and promoting community-based enterprises and value chains rooted in sustainability, such as non-timber forest products, agroecology, and eco-tourism. We work to implement and scale up agroforestry practices that enhance food security, nutrition, and soil health, while facilitating community access to fair markets and micro-finance to ensure these livelihoods are viable and directly aligned with conservation outcomes.

  • Key Activities:
    1. Agroecology & Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) Cooperatives: Establish demo farms and provide training in soil conservation, organic pest control, and sustainable harvesting of NTFPs (e.g., honey, njansang, bush mango). Facilitate formation of marketing cooperatives.
    2. Community-Based Ecotourism Ventures: Train local guides (Stewards of Tomorrow ambassadors), develop community-owned camp sites or homestays around key cultural/natural sites, and create craft associations linked to tourism.
    3. Conservation-Linked Micro-Grants: Provide small startup grants or in-kind support for enterprises that demonstrably reduce pressure on wildlife (e.g., snail farming, bee-keeping, sustainable fish ponds).
